About

Coast of Chains is a serious historical strategy game set on the West African coast in 1650. Six European crowns race for the same shoreline, and you sail with one of them. You dock, bargain with the kingdoms of the coast, and choose between trade and plunder. Every gain is weighed against its human cost.

The opening scene is a painted view of the coast at dusk. Tall-masted ships fly rival national flags offshore. A whitewashed fort with a wooden pier stands on the beach beneath a flag, and canoes move through the surf. Thatched settlements and palm trees line the green shore. The muted period palette and golden sky set a grounded, sober tone.

The game depicts the transatlantic slave trade from the side of the European powers that carried it out. It does not hide what that trade cost the people of Africa. Press Begin the Campaign to take your place on the coast.
