About

Break On Through: The Midnight Road opens on a quiet stretch of highway far from anywhere. A man known only as The Wanderer stands beside his stalled teal classic car, hood propped open, one headlight casting a warm pool of light across the asphalt while dark pine forests and distant hills fade into the night.

"Come on, old girl. Not tonight." His words set the tone for a moody, story-driven journey told through in-game scenes and character dialogue. The game features a clean low-poly 3D look, with blocky figures, simple shapes and a deep starry sky that make the empty road feel both peaceful and uneasy.

Settle in for an atmospheric roadside story, and find out where the midnight road leads once the engine goes quiet.

How it was made

“CREATE A 3D OPEN-WORLD ACTION RPG CALLED: BREAK ON THROUGH: THE MIDNIGHT ROAD ENGINE / PLATFORM: Build this as a real 3D browser game optimized for Tesana. Use third-person 3D gameplay. The player should be able to freely explore the world with a camera positioned behind and slightly above the character. IMPORTANT DEVELOPMENT RULE: Do NOT attempt to build the entire final RPG in one pass. First create a polished, playable vertical slice containing the opening region and first complete story mission. The opening build must feel like the beginning of a larger open-world RPG, not a tiny arcade game. After the opening works correctly, the project will expand region by region. GAME GENRE: 3D open-world action RPG. Psychological fantasy. Exploration. Survival elements. Story choices. Vehicle exploration. Light combat. Mystery. Supernatural horror without relying on gore. SETTING AND MOOD: The game takes place in a strange rural American world trapped somewhere between midnight, memory, dream, and reality. The atmosphere should combine: Dark rural highways. Small towns. Old factories. Abandoned gas stations. Forests. Junkyards. Old churches. Motels. Neon city streets. Deserts. Huge moonlit landscapes. Radio towers. Strange supernatural Doors. The atmosphere should be inspired by the mystery, poetry, rebellion, darkness, blues, psychedelic rock, spiritual searching, desert imagery, and strange beauty associated with late-1960s psychedelic culture. Do NOT copy Jim Morrison, The Doors, their songs, recordings, lyrics, artwork, likenesses, characters, melodies, or copyrighted material. Everything must be original. OVERALL FEEL: The player should frequently think: “What the hell is over there?” Exploration should feel irresistible. Do not explain every mystery. Some things should remain ambiguous. The world should feel: Beautiful. Lonely. Dangerous. Spiritual. Unsettling. Funny at unexpected moments. Dreamlike. Human. PLAYER CHARACTER: The player controls: THE WANDERER He is a strong, working-class man who has survived a difficult life. He is resourceful with tools, vehicles, machinery, and physical work. He carries regret, memories, anger, hope, faith, fear, and unanswered questions. His journey through the world becomes a journey through himself. Do not make him a silent generic hero. Give him occasional spoken reactions and internal observations. He should feel like a real person rather than a chosen-one fantasy stereotype. CAMERA: Third-person over-the-shoulder exploration camera. Camera follows behind the player. Mouse or right stick rotates camera. The character moves relative to camera direction. Camera should not clip through walls. Allow moderate camera zoom if supported. CONTROLS: Keyboard and mouse: WASD = Move. Mouse = Look. Shift = Sprint. Space = Dodge or quick evade. E = Interact. Left Mouse = Attack. Right Mouse = Block or focus flashlight depending on equipped item. F = Toggle flashlight. Q = Special ability. I = Inventory. J = Journal. M = Map. Esc = Pause. Also support gamepad controls if possible. FIRST PLAYABLE REGION: Create an open rural region called: THE MIDNIGHT HIGHWAY The environment contains: A long two-lane highway. Fields. Dark forest. Telephone poles. Power lines. Abandoned vehicles. Road signs. A creek. A small abandoned gas station. A broken-down player vehicle. A distant blinking radio tower. Several explorable roadside locations. A supernatural Door behind the gas station. The player should be free to walk away from the gas station and explore. Do NOT trap the player inside a tiny mission area. However, use natural boundaries such as: Forest. Collapsed bridges. Blocked roads. Cliffs. Deep water. Locked gates. These boundaries can open later as the game expands. OPENING SCENE: Begin at midnight. The Wanderer stands beside his broken-down old car. The hood is open. The engine will not start. The headlights flicker. The radio briefly produces static even though the ignition is off. The camera slowly reveals: The highway. The gas station. The enormous moon. The distant radio tower. Then give control to the player. Do not use a long opening cinematic. FIRST QUEST: THE DEAD RADIO Quest objective 1: INVESTIGATE THE GAS STATION The player enters the abandoned gas station. There is no electrical power. The building contains: Front counter. Shelves. Storage room. Restroom. Office. Old vending machines. Fuse panel. Generator equipment. Old radio. Notes. Environmental storytelling objects. SECOND OBJECTIVE: FIND A FLASHLIGHT A flashlight can be found in the storage area. Picking it up unlocks flashlight use. The flashlight has limited battery energy. Batteries can later be found throughout the world. Some supernatural symbols should only appear under flashlight illumination. THIRD OBJECTIVE: RESTORE POWER The gas station generator is missing a”
