You are the shepherd, and it is the last hour of daylight. The flock spreads out to the horizon — hundreds of animals, every one identical to the last. Somewhere among them is a wolf wearing a fleece, and it is patient, and it is hungry.
It will not give itself away by looking wrong. It looks exactly right. It gives itself away by behaving wrong: it never puts its head down to graze, it doesn't flinch when you crowd it, it ignores your whistle, it keeps turning to watch you, the other sheep leave a quiet gap around it. Watch long enough and the field starts telling on it.
Raise your spyglass to study a distant animal. Whistle across the whole flock and see who answers. Plant a marker flag on anything that feels wrong, keep your notes straight, and cross-reference until only one candidate is left. Then look it in the eye and call it out — because every wrong accusation spooks the flock, and while you hesitate, the wolf is still eating.
Five nights. Bigger flocks, fewer tells, less time, and a wolf that gets bolder every evening.
