Somebody has returned a book to the wrong shelf.
This would be a small problem in a small library. This is not a small library. The stacks run on past the haze in every direction, honey-oak and crimson carpet, a hundred thousand cloth-bound volumes sitting in perfect order — and exactly one of them is in the wrong place.
You are a very small librarian. You have a request slip, a pair of round glasses, and until closing time.
The library is properly ordered, which is the only reason this is possible at all. Every aisle is a subject, every bay wears a brass placard with its number range, and your slip tells you precisely where the book ought to be. Start there. Look at the gap.
Then read spines. Pull one and the library will tell you, with enormous patience and just a hint of judgement, whether you're getting warmer. A chime picks up as you close in. When you're truly stuck, the head librarian will offer a nudge — she knows more than she lets on.
There is no timer, nothing to fight, and nothing to lose. There is one book, somewhere, being extremely quiet. Go and find it.
