Vortex Raiders is a neon arcade space shooter that runs in your browser. Drop in a credit, hit start, and fight off waves of enemies that spiral in from the edges, form up, then dive at you. Drones are worth 100, or 200 when diving. Splitters break in two when shot, Spinners spray ring shots, and from wave 4 Comets join in. Every fifth wave brings the Vortex Maw, a spinning boss with orbiting gun pods and three bullet patterns that speed up as it weakens.

The soundtrack is a minor-key synth track generated live in the game. The lead line circles you from left to right once per bar while the bass spins the other way. The music speeds up each wave, and the spin doubles during boss fights, so headphones help.

Chain quick kills to build a multiplier up to x8, and grab power-ups for a spread shot, laser, shield or extra bomb. An extra ship arrives at 30,000 points. Coin-op touches include an attract screen, a credit counter, a score advance table and a top-5 high-score table with three-letter initials, saved in your browser on that device only.

Controls: On keyboard, press C to add a coin, Space to start and fire, arrows or WASD to move, and X for a bomb. On touch, tap to add a coin and tap again to start, then drag to fly while your ship fires automatically, and use the NOVA button to clear the screen. Touch controls have not yet been tested on a real phone.
