Crown and Steel is a slow, deliberate grand strategy game played from a ruler's war room. The realm lies before you as a sand-toned table map: a winding river, carved forests and keeps from Frostpeak and Thornhall to Crownhold, Stonebridge and Dunmere. Painted flags mark your own commanders and the enemy hosts you know of.

You never see the true war. Your forces are pinned where they stood on a given day: Edric Hale with 1000 men at Crownhold, Maren Voss with 750 at Stonebridge, Oric Dunn with 500 near Harrowmere. Enemy bands like the Red Stag, the Black Boar, the Crimson Hand and the Bone Antler appear only as rough strength estimates noted "before the war." What the pins don't say matters as much as what they do.

News arrives as parchment letters with wax seals, waiting unread on your desk: a report on the enemy from your spy Wren, word that your armies stand ready from Edric Hale, and the state of the realm from your steward Aldous Penn. Open them one by one, consult your commanders and the ledger, then write your orders and commit.

The campaign begins on the 1st of Highsun with 100 days until the first snows. Every choice is made on old news, and careful thinking matters more than quick reactions.
